I adopted a chihuahua who was believed to have been rescued from a puppy mill. She was obviously over bred and was grateful to have been saved. She is a wonderfully affectionate dog. She is phenomenal with my children as well as with me. She truly is a joy, however when my husband calls to her to take her outside she instantly cowers. She will leak urine on the floor when he approaches her. I think she was likely abused by a man previously. Is there any way to train them both to change this behavior?
Yes from the sound of it, I think she was abused too.
Make sure your husband isn’t staring at the dog for one. Cause the dog will take it as a threat.
Also, Let the dog approach him. If he’s going to the dog, of course she’s gonna run. In time, she’ll warm up. Just no eye contact and have him feed her and take her for walks. Good Luck!

take it to a dog pyscologist. He/she will put you and the dog on a program to gradually build its confidence around your husband

i don’t think your chihuahua os gonna behave for your husband because i have one myself and she only behaves for me because i mostly take care of her and shes pretty mean to everyone else around the hose so maybe you should have your husband take care of her/him for a little while so she/he gets used to him and noticed that hes not like a bad person or anything

I would suggest asking a dog trainer in your area. have them go to dog training together to build a bond and confidence. if you can not afford that than have your dog and husband go outside alone and play ball or practice basic training with positive reinforcement.
