How Can I Get My Chihuahua to Eat This Food?

I recently took my dog to the vet, because of a loss of appetite. My vet prescribed IVD Duck Formula Canned Food, to make it easier on his digestive system. He also told me to feed him Royal Canin 28 Mini Chihuahua dry food, which he loves. The problem is, he won’t touch the soft food. Would it help to mix the dry and the wet together? What can I do to get him to eat at least some of the wet food?

the trick to get a dog to switch foods is to slowly switch foods start off slowly adding more wet food in with the orignal not giving more food than you are told to eventually you will get to the point where you are just feeding him wet food best of luck!!!!!

mix it with a little broth from some cooked poultry (no seasoning), for my doggie (she’s almost 12!) I mix her food with cooked ground chicken or turkey.

YOU know i wonder how much exercise he has . Even small dogs need to exercise. THAt will build his appitite.Another thing i did was boil chicken bones 4 broth.and sprinkle a tablespoon of cooled broth over his wet food that may work.I have done the same with beef bones too.Good luck(no salt)

Good luck LOL. I have a chihuahua male that the vet wanted on Science Diet ID canned because he wouldn’t eat dog food. Well, he won’t eat the canned food either. He eats Royal Canin Sensible Choice Natural Blend 9 (a dry food) and only this food. I fought with him to eat food for about 6 months before finding this one (he’d eat stuff from the table or the trash but not dog food unless he was really hungry). 6 years later and he’s still eating this food and the vet gave up on trying to get him to eat canned LOL. He still won’t touch canned food.

YES YOU CAN MIX THE WET FOOD IN WITH THE DRY FOOD . THAT MAKES IT EASIER FOR THEIR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM TO GET FAMILIARIZED WITH THE NEW FOOD. IF THAT DOESN’T WORK TRY SPOON FEEDING THE SOFT FOOD TO HIM OR HER THAT WAY THEY FEEL SPECIAL AND MIGHT MAKE THEM WANT TO EAT THEIR FOOD BETTER. GOOD LUCK

Leave him alone. My chihuahua also does not like canned food and has been eating dry food her whole life. She is very healthy…so my vet has said to leave the canned food alone.

ok this might seem weird but i do it all the time to my dog…
    step #1:get gloves
    step #2:put gloves on hands
step #3:get the wet dog food the doctor prescibed
step #4:get get alot of dry food( ok maybe it can fit 1/2 of the bowl)
    step #A5:get peanut butter(opional)
step #B5:make the wet dog food mushy(if it has not been mushed already)
step #6:roll the wet dog food into individual small balls
step #A7: if using peanutbutter put alittle on the ball the go to step B7
step #B7:dump the balls into dryfood until every part is covered
step #8: give to them like a treat
step #9: if they like it put it in their bowl

very weird but my dog likes it
then he got use to soft food later in the week!

There are many new flavored gravies sold at pet stores now…maybe try one of them…when my little chi gets picky i put a little on his food and he gobbles it up…he tends to like the pot roast flavor the best, but all dogs are different…goodluck!

Since he likes the dry food, I would try mixing some it with the moist dog food. Start out with more dry than moist and gradually decrease it, sometimes this works pretty good he just has to get use to the taste.

I had one dog on the farm that would not eat wet food, all I did was mix it up with some pellets, and he ate it with no problem.
