How Much Does a Chihuahua Eat a Day?

I just got a two year old chihuahua. I think she is not eating enough. What is normal for her age? And what foods do chihuahuas like or need the best?

Also, does any one know what I can do about her being in heat. She is always trying to hump my arm. I want her to have puppies in the future so what can I do for the mean while?

THANKS!

My chihuahua doesn't eat very much but he is still healthy. I buy Pedigree Small Breed dog food with the meaty filled pieces. My Chihuahua loves the meaty pieces, he will pick them out and eat them first.

If you feel your dog is too skinny, try a different food. Maybe she doesn't like the food you are giving her. Also when she does something good, give her a treat. My Chihuahua loves soft chicken treats.

My chihuahua is a male so when he was having the hump urge he would use his toy. I would suggest buying her a soft teddy bear to cuddle up with and maybe she will start to hump it instead of your arm.

Before you breed her with another chihuahua do a lot of research. They are hard dogs to take care of in this process. People usually have to spend lots and lots of money and time to get chihuahuas to breed and carry the pups. You could maybe contact a chihuahua breeder and they could give you some needed information.

Good luck and if you lived around me, I would bring my puppy over to visit yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You'll definetely know if he is not eating enough by his body figure. Does he have ribs sticking out? You should not be able to see his ribs, but you should be able to feel them. See the per day guide on the bag of the food. That is the best bet. If he is not too skinny, then you shouldn't be concerned about it. Chichis are very tine, and probably don't eat any more than 1/2 a cup per day.

    As far as breeding!

Be aware, that chichi's are known for c-sections. If you breed her, you have to do it between the ages of 2 and 5, and you need to be very knowledgable in breeding this specific breed. It can be very DANGEROUS to breed her too many times, and you need to be in contact with her vet if you are concerned about her at all.

read teh bag of dog food, it should give guidelines for feeding. You may need to adjust from there.. if she seems to be loosing weight, add a little more, if she is gaining weight, cut back. It can take a little trial and error to figure out how much your dog needs to maintain weight.

Why do you want puppies? Seriously. There are plenty of Chi's that need homes. Look at http://www.petfinder.com. Those are homless dogs in shelters and rescues. Chi's also only have 1-2 pups, and often need a cecarian which can cost $1000 and up.

If she's in heat, you just got her AND it's hot outside, she could very well be eating less than normal.
My adult chis eat about a cup a day of dry dog food. (Each).
I split it up between two feedings. Mine all love an occasional bit of carrot, apple or cheese.
If you don't want to have her spayed, she needs to know that humping your arm is not acceptable behavior. When she climbs up, turn your arm over and push her away with your fingers around her rib cage so you don't hurt her. Tell her "NO". Shouldn't take her long to figure it out.

They only should get a half cup a dogy. If you really want your dog to eat more try dog gravy. And put her inside the house when she eats. She will eat more.
