How Much Is a Chihuahua Supposed to Eat?

I just bought a Chihuahua that is about 8 weeks old. I bought him some Purina Tiny Bites Indoor dog food, but he takes 1 piece of food at a time, walks away, and eats that 1 piece. He’ll come back for more, but the most I’ve seen him eat is like 5 or 6 little pieces. Is that normal or should he be eating more? Or could it be that the pieces themselves are actually too big? I bought him "Tiny Bites". Do they come any smaller?

Anywhere from 1/2 cup to 1 1/4 cup a day. Don’t worry too much if it eats less, only worry if it eats none, or way too much. Most dogs will only eat what they need. If he seems healthy and playful, in other words doesn’t just lay around all day, then I’d just let him eat what he wants, you might try adding a little water to it or something though. Puppies sometimes have trouble getting used to hard dog food.

He is still real tiny and probably is not used to regular dog food. Probably will need to eat 4-5 times a day at first.

Make sure it is PUPPY FOOD.

I have a 13 year old chihuahua. She does the exact same thing. She will even act like her food is a playtoy and play with it. The most I have seen my dog eat is about 5 or 6 at a time ever since she was a baby.

They don’t eat much and are very picky eaters. It should be fine.

Purina is not the greatest food. Try geting a higher quality food and that may help. Something like Evo, Candidae, Natural Balance, or similar. You won’t find them at the grocery store, but they are worth the trip for the health of your dog.

It’ll take a while for you dog to get used to eating that food from that bowl (or wherever it’s eating it from). Dogs have to get into routines, and it usually takes a week or two to get accustomed to them. Don’t worry about it too much.
