This chihuahua is purebred (has no papers) and is 1 and a half years old (adult). She is three pounds and is very healthy and beautiful, amazing temperament, but has only had ONE set of shots (so she still needs two more sets of shots). The owner is my co-worker, and she has to get rid of the dog because she has only had it for four months and it is stressing out her other chihuahua. She got it straight from a breeder. She is asking $450 for the dog. Is this a reasonable price? What would you pay for this dog?
I also wanted to add that we’ve had the chi in our home for a week to test her out, and she is doing great, so I know that she has already bonded to us!
Also, we live in the New York City area, where chihuahua puppies usually run $800-$1600.
I wouldn’t own a chihuahua.. but I think thats way too much for a dog that is that old and without papers! Look around for another one on craigslist and see what other people are asking.

$200-$250

I would pay about 50 bucks and that is it. Id much rather have a Huskie but even then I wouldnt go over 200!

I would drive to Mexico and buy one for 5 bucks.

That is a good price. An adult purebred at 1 and a half years, I would expect her to have more then one set of shots however… But yes, that sounds resonable.
Good luck with your new chi!
Depends on how well she matches up to the standards though… so it is hard to tell…

The most I would pay would be enough to cover the vet bills that your coworker has already paid. You have no papers on this dog and know nothing about its parents’ genetic health so you could be looking at some major genetic defects later in life–you don’t even know if it is a purebred chihuahua. Furthermore, if this dog has only had ONE shot, it has not been properly cared for. I would think carefully before making this decision if I were you.

i would take off about 100 or 150 dollars i would try and reason with her i were you.

Don’t pay for a dog sweetie…go help one that needs a home at a shelter. It svery inexpensive and you are saving a life. I know the little taco dogs are very cute and I would love to have one myself but my lab came from the humane society and he is my best bud! If you are still in to doing that you need to at least make a deal with her because the dog is not "legit" and you still have to put money out when you get him. Good luck and think on it hard.

No papers is a rip off. Health is usually very poor as well. Go to the shelter and get one. What if something is wrong with this dog – like so many – and you work with this person? This reeks of disaster.

OK, I think the SPCA charges like $10. WHy would I spend more to buy from a breeder? Adopted pets have ALL thier shots (no ifs about it), are already "fixed", and are usually already housebroken…

Hi, That is a very individual thing. Is the dog registered? Does it come with a guarantee of good health? Is it show or pet quality? What can you afford? Is is a puppy mill dog or do you know the breeder or their reputation?
Sorry, no answers, just more questions to consider.

She should be asking an adoption fee, at best.
Your co-worker is nuts to think that anyone should pay that much for a dog that may have to be broken of bad habits, may develop behavior issues due to stress, caused by being uprooted AND the dog doesn’t have all of its shots?!
She’s an irresponsible pet owner and should not be selling, but GIVING that dog to you. The nerve to think that someone’s going to pay her $450 and then have to take the dog to the vet.
Can you say, "RIPOFF?!"

I wouldn’t pay more than 80 bucks for a dog, considering that’s how much they are at the local humane society with their shots up to date, and they’re spayed/neutered. it’s ridiculous how people can get away with selling a dog for over 100 bucks!!

I got a Chihuahua yesterday. A mother and her 3 babies. I got it for free but I would be guessing $200-$400 on it.

a pup w/o papers runs around 450, so i’d think that the dogs worth 300. as for the missing shots, i wouldn’t make a big deal about it. my only thought is those dogs are 1 owner types so she may take time to acclimate.

I payed 200 for my chihuahua that I got from a breeder, most of the time at the pet store they ask for like 1,000 so I’d say if you really like the dog then $450 is a good price. But since she is your co-worker I think she shouldn’t ask that much from oyu. Try to get her to lower her fees maybe ask her if you can pay 350 instead. But the dog does need a home, so I’m sure she’d lower fr you, but I’d get it. It sounds like a good deal!!!

well honey, i have two chis from the same breed(purebred and beautiful).Mine did not have papers either. I got the one when she was 8 weeks old for $200 and i got her sister a year later from the same guy for $100. Obviously as they get older you should not pay as much especially if they are set in bad habits-like pottying in the house, which chis are real bad about. I would say that if she is charging you more than $100, you are getting ripped off-you can buy them with papers for that depending on your demographic area.

I wouldnt pay any more than $350 for it, most pure bred dogs go for about $400 but this one doesnt have all its shots so i’d knock it down another $50. I payed $300 for my full bred long haired miniature dacshaund and she had all her shots and a chip implanted in her neck as a type of tracking device type thing. I think $450 is slitely high especially with not all its shots.

I am sorry am I reading this right. The dog hasn’t completed its shots and it is almost 2 years old?
Stressing out the other chihuahua in what way??? Something doesn’t sound right here. I think something is up….
$450 no papers…
Um sorry no way. Never would I ever buy the dog.

Being un-papered; Unless this is an extremely unique and sought after pup, a prime example of the breed–the price is way to high! A pup of purebred registration status however; that is not even show quality,(called "pet" quality) is still the attempt of a serious breeder to produce the highest quality progeny. So that "pet" pup is still in posses ion of qualities that came from years of careful breeding. The show quality pups bring prices from $400.-one or several thousand dollars. The general rule of price is the pup should cost no less than the Stud fee payed for the Sire’s service. Because that Sire is meritorious enough in the consistent good quality of his "get" to earn top dollar at Stud. So your beautiful little pup should definitely bring a price so that he will be considered worthy of taking good care of (because many people who attain dogs for nothing disregard them due to little investment sadly). Two Hundred dollars would be fair in my estimation.
