Long Haired Chihuahua – Planning to Adopt a Small Dog?

You may have heard about this, about some dog lover’s surprise about how loyal a long haired Chihuahua can be. Something like this is gotten from experience, not by something you can read about and watch online. It’s not likely these celebrities are always able to take care of their long hair Chihuahua themselves, given their careers and busy schedules.

If you’re thinking of getting one of these adorable toy dogs yourself, the best sources are probably pet owners themselves. You want to know what you’re getting into, so let this short article guide you.

Some have characterized the Chihuahua as a bonsai dog, smaller than a cat, but as spry as a deer. If you’ve never had a dog that’s possessive, you’re in for a shock – Chihuahuas are know to get aggressive when strangers, kids, and other pets come near its owner. That’s not far from the truth.

Historically, or at least as is documented in most literature, Chihuahuas are supposed to have been originally from Mexico. The Chihuahua is, by far, the smallest dog in the world. They are also among the most adorable, with big, honest, hesitant, watchful eyes, an apple-shaped head, and tasseled ears. Just imagine how small they are – six to nine inches tall.

You can call them handbag dogs, purse dogs, toy dogs, dogs for rich people, and dogs by single people living alone – but you can’t deny how “handy” a Chihuahua is. Still, there are some families with little kids that love this breed. Chihuahuas can be possessive of its owner, and anyone in the vicinity just gets snapped at, which is why it’s often not advised for families with kids and other pets to have Chihuahuas.

Little kids treat dogs like rowdy stuff toys, pulling their ears, kicking them, suddenly rushing at them to hug them. A Chihuahua could suffer broken bones from that, and a kick to those large eyes could end up blinding the small dog.

Although Chihuahuas are a favorite breed for entry into dog shows, some people do choose them as companion pets, despite the show dog potential.

You want to be sure you can provide the care and support needed by this breed, and that means financially and emotionally. This is a breed that relieves itself often, with no warning, and must be fed small meals as scheduled – it’s prone to low blood sugar and it’s susceptible to a host of other health problems.

Although there’s currently no consensus on the exact origin of the Chihuahua, much less its sub type, the long haired Chihuahua; but there’s agreement among small dog owners that this breed is one of the most adorable. Chihuahuas, including long hair Chihuahua, tend to be popular among those who live alone, or only have a few people living with them, and who pursue relatively quiet lives. But if you’re used to calm pets that don’t go out of their way to get your attention, then you might want to reconsider getting a Chihuahua.
